As a young artist, I was lucky enough to study under Master Oil Painter Esteban Sanz' in Ibiza, Spain, for four years. Traveling around Europe with just a backpack and my sketchbooks, I learned how to find inspiration everywhere I looked and in every character I met along the way. After returning to Minnesota, I taught art, creative wiring and music to students in the public school system for over seven years. During which time I learned that we are all Artists at heart and how anyone can make art, if they can learn to love the process. I learned how we all can learn to tune out the negative voices, and amplify our own artistic voice and be heard through the power of the creative process. I have seen this work time and time again. In 2016, I had the opportunity to move out to Los Angeles and pursue a career as a professional artist and illustrator for the entertainment industry. Since then, I have worked as a Comic Book Artist, Illustrator, 2D Video Game Artist and Storyboard Artist for companies such as Warner Brothers Films, Walmart, Amazon, Uber, Snickers, Domino's Pizza and Cartoon Network, to name a few. During the past five years working in LA I have learned an entirely new set of skills and tools for the creative toolbox. In my classes my aim to inform, instruct, empower and inspire artists to develop their own styles, workflow and inner confidence. I will also go over some solid strategies to address and overcome the imposter syndrome most artists face at some point in their journey. I will make myself available to my students after the class is over to reach out and ask questions over social media to remain connected and informed. And hopefully lay the foundation for a positive and constructive creative community to support one another. I look forward to showing others the tricks I have learned during my time on the artist’s path. We are all artists, and I can’t wait to see what we can all create together!

In this class we will learn how to sketch, draw and paint portraits in multiple styles, angles and techniques. These will apply to both Photoshop CC and traditional mediums alike.

We will discuss the secret to unlocking your own well of inspiration and how to stay motivated and excited to make art every day. And why I strongly believe the portrait is one of, if not the most important tool in an artist’s toolbox

We will use traditional methods such the Golden Spiral and the Rule of the Thirds to find out what make some portraits catch our eye and hold our gaze.

We will learn how to mine our own favorite movies, shows, games and characters for inspiration in order to really understand and explore why we love to create in the first place. As well as how to keep it fun and fresh, while not taking ourselves too seriously in the process.

And lastly, I will share some strategies on how to reset and overcome frustrations, burnout and insecurities to become the indomitable powerhouse of an artist!

Any skill level is welcome and this class is a safe space where we keep it creative, constructive and positive. Best results if you are working with Photoshop CC and are able to download the free brushes from Photoshop called Megapack and Watercolor so I am able to show you some techniques with certain brushes, but these will work with any PS brushes or traditional medium.
