I have been a professional artist since 1991, and have worked in various industries (comic books, illustration, film, animation, video games) and used various mediums (traditional drawing/painting to digital 2D and 3D). I have done freelance work as well as spent time in various studios as art director and concept artist for animation and video games. Besides doing art, I'm also a musician and have written songs for pop-stars and composed music for film and games. I'm very passionate about writing and storytelling too and have written graphic novels, screenplays, novels, and articles for magazines. I'm also a photographer and shoot portraits, real estate, food, products, and fashion. When not pursuing creative endeavors, I teach all the things I do professionally (art, photography, music, writing, game development). This class is for artists of any level, regardless if you can only draw stick figures or can already do decent portraits. During the class, you will learn how to draw and paint expressive realistic portraits, while avoiding common pitfalls that inexperienced artists suffer from, such as: -Incorrect shapes and proportions that detracts from the likeness to the subject, or results in awkward looking anatomy. -Clunky approaches to rendering values that either appears amateurish and messy, or "rendered to death" to unnatural and sterile smoothness that kills all artistic expressiveness and spontaneity. -Lack of selective detailing so the overall artwork lacks interesting dynamics and areas of focus. -Bad choice of references to base the portrait on, which means starting on a weak foundation such as photos with ineffective or unflattering lighting, unappealing pose and expression, or lack of fidelity. -Ineffective management of macro level of values to create a harmonious image, resulting in unappealing extraneous visual noise. -Inconsistent stylistic parameters that create images lacking cohesive overall artistic vision. I will address these common pitfalls by demonstrating and explaining how to overcome them and create portraits that aren't just realistic, but also expressive with distinct artistic sensibility. The truth is, being able to copy photos like a machine to a high degree of fidelity ("OMG! I thought it was a photo and not a drawing!") isn't as hard as most people think--all proficient artists with enough patience can do it (and I will teach high fidelity rendering as well), but I think most artists prefer their work to be recognized as drawings and paintings, and not "exact copies of photos that no one can tell aren't actual photos." This is why this class places as much emphasis on expressiveness and artistic sensibility as accuracy and realism. Prerequisites: Any skill and experience level welcome, whether you can only draw stick figures, or can already do pretty decent portraits but wants to level up. Materials Required: Digital or analog tools, as long as you can draw and paint with them. But keep in mind that digital tools have the advantages of undos, layers, quick and easy access to any color, vast range of drawing tools, transform tools, quick editing of contrast, values, and colors, etc., and those advantages often translates into more confidence to experiment and try different approaches, because you know you can easily backtrack or make changes. The concepts taught in the class can be applied to both analog and digital, but when doing the demonstrations, I will be using digital tools (usually Photoshop or Procreate), as I prefer the convenience, flexibility, and power.
