Karl F. Wimer is an award-winning cartoonist and illustrator of sports, business, and all things random, published in books, magazines, and newspapers across five continents. His experience as a two-sport college athlete provides unique perspective on the world of sports. Years of work in the trenches as a marketing executive inform his visual commentary on the business world, and provide a platform for his expertise in creative ideation and brainstorming. Karl’s been a syndicated cartoonist for the Cartoonist Group while regularly creating work for WoodyPaige.com, Mile High Sports Magazine, Denver Business Journal, Investment Professional, and Central European Business Weekly. He’s been a member of the American Association of Editorial Cartoonists. Karl’s cartoons have won multiple 1st Place Awards (Society of Professional Journalists, Colorado Press Association, Party Toons). His work has appeared annually in the Best US Editorial Cartoons of the Year book, in USAToday, NPR, Fox News, and in college economics textbooks. Additionally, Karl has created over 80 whiteboard videos for an array of clients, combining his marketing and branding experience with his cartooning skills. Although Karl has had some formal training, he is mostly self-taught and brings a fresh and accessible approach to teaching art and the process.

Most illustrators and cartoonists develop a style and perfect it over time. But what if a customer wants something different? Or what if the illustrative style you use for your typical work just isn't appropriate for that logo you need to create? Or what if you're just starting out and you'd love to experiment with different styles to find the one that feels the most natural for you?

Here's the class that's just right for you.
We'll spend 90 minutes experimenting with the craft of illustration to make characters. People, animals and everything in between. With a range of different styles. I'll show you the tricks I've learned, through classes or simply through trial and error, so you can get creating your own dynamic characters.
It'll be fun and educational, and you'll come away with great tools for your next project or simply your personal art efforts.
Some of what you will learn in the class:
  • Simple sketched characters that have a loose, effortless feel as final art
  • Heavy, stylized characters that are especially effective for mascots and logos
  • Caricatures of public figures
  • More realistic characters with various treatments including pencil, online brushes, color, etc.
  • Action injected into characters. Simple, standing characters can get boring!
  • Character expression. The right expression helps tell your story as well as anything else.
I can't wait to help you bring all those undrawn characters in your imagination to life!
